Although it is nearly Christmas work is continuing with the B4RN network. The video below shows preparation work for a window cut in the fibre cabling which will allow the individual fibres to be spliced through to the customer properties.
Notice the time of day. That being it’s not day. It’s dark but work continues such is the commitment from the community to forge ahead with the core fibre work.
You can see the preparation work required to strip back the protective outer casing and expose the individual fibres. The fibres are coated in a Vaseline type substance (other petroleum jellies are available), which needs to be cleaned off to prevent them from sticking together and in readiness for fusion splicing. The fibres are clean when they “sing”. It’s fiddly work but getting easier with each one. These are valuable skills that members of the community are learning which can be applied elsewhere.
Anyhow here is the video.
Incidentally, B4RN are looking for extra experienced fusion splicers who are willing to volunteer some time to the project and pass on their skills to members of the community. This will allow us to connect up the properties quicker.
If you are able to help in any way or know of someone that can, please get in touch.
