The B4RN gigabit full fibre broadband network has gone live in Burton-in-Lonsdale!
People across the village are now enjoying B4RN’s service thanks to years of hard graft by local volunteers, working alongside B4RN contractors and staff.
The first residents went ‘live’ on Wednesday 23rd November. This was followed up with a meeting on the Thursday night (24th Nov) where volunteers explained things like how to extend Wi-Fi round the home and VoIP (internet telephony).
More and more residents were connected over the next few weeks as the project progresses to completion.
This is the culmination of some determined work by the local volunteer B4RN group. They have given their time and skills to make sure everyone who wants a B4RN connection in Burton-in-Lonsdale, gets one.
Key Volunteer Simon Stockton said: “It is not very often that an opportunity presents itself for a community to be actively involved in a project to improve the standard of living of all the residents, whilst raising money for the community and bringing people together.
“The internet has become as vital as the electricity, water and gas supplies to our homes. Without a decent internet connection people struggle to live their daily lives with more and more services going online. B4RN has enabled our community to embrace a step change in internet connectivity with speeds up to x50 times faster than what is available from national carriers by creating a robust and future proof network in our village serving us for decades to come.
“B4RN facilitated the B4RN4BiL (Burton in Lonsdale) team to deliver Hyperfast Broadband to a remote corner of North Yorkshire. Despite being 30 minutes’ drive from the nearest town, our little village has the fastest broadband you can get! This is thanks to B4RN, generosity of landowners, investors, a handful of dedicated volunteers, a willing and able Community Workforce and a receptive neighbourhood. Without these the project would have not achieved the success that it has, a massive thank you needs to go to all those involved, especially the Zone Champions and members of the Community Workforce. Not only have they given up their time to volunteer, they have also embraced the community spirit, met new friends, made acquaintances and decided to come together week after week to do something to make our collective lives better.”
B4RN’s Project Build Coordinator, Hannah Robinson praised the volunteers: “Without all our Volunteers, the Burton in Lonsdale Project simply would not have happened. Simon has done a fantastic job of organising everyone and bringing the Community together. They have all gone above and beyond to keep homeowners up-to-date, provide advice and form a dedicated Community Dig Team to complete garden digs and house kit installations. Also, a huge thank you to all the Landowners surrounding the village, without their generosity and support the build stage would not have progressed as quickly as it has.”
