B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) is a unique organisation working closely with communities across the UK to bring hyperfast, full-fibre broadband to rural areas. As a Community Benefit Society, driven by innovation and a strong sense of purpose, we work hand-in-hand with local volunteers and stakeholders to deliver a service that’s built by the community, for the community. Joining B4RN means becoming part of a dedicated team making a real difference in people's lives, while thriving in a supportive and collaborative environment where everyone’s contribution matters.

The Role

We’re looking for a hands-on and supportive Principal Network Engineer to help lead and grow B4RN’s Fibre to the Home network. You’ll play a key role in shaping how our network is deployed, optimised and maintained, while mentoring and guiding our engineering team. This is a chance to make a real difference in connecting communities while supporting an organisation that values collaboration, learning and shared success.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Lead the deployment and optimisation of our broadband network, ensuring reliable, high-quality connections for our customers.

  • Mentor and guide the Network Engineering team during installations, splicing, testing and commissioning.

  • Develop and maintain standards, best practices and procedures to keep the network running smoothly.

  • Solve complex network challenges, identify root causes and implement lasting improvements.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organisation to plan network expansions, upgrades and projects.

  • Participate in our 24/7 operations via an on-call rota to address critical network issues.

  • Maintain accurate records of network changes, configurations and issues.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a proactive problem solver who enjoys supporting and inspiring others. The ideal candidate will have experience in network engineering, ideally with Fibre to the Home networks, and strong communication and collaborative skills. You will help lead our engineering team and should be flexible, with the ability to work unsociable hours, travel away from home and take part in an on-call rota for critical network issues. You must hold a full, valid driving licence along with full colour vision.

What You Will Get From Us

  • An active, outdoor role that provides variety and rewarding experiences every day

  • Opportunities to increase your earnings through overtime and call-out retainers

  • 28 days holiday per year plus an extra day for each year of service (up to a maximum of 5 extra days)

  • Company pension scheme with employer contributions

  • Medicash health care plan to support your health and well-being

  • A welcoming, collaborative team environment where your ideas are valued

  • The satisfaction of knowing your work helps connect rural communities to vital digital services

  • Opportunities for professional development and learning to grow your skills further

If you’re excited about this role and think you could be a great fit, we would love to hear from you. To apply, please send your CV to our People team at recruitment@b4rn.org.uk.
