Digging News Update
As followers of this site will know there has been lots of activity lately from many members of the community involving big diggers, spades, wellies, mud, cups of tea and most importantly, cake! Well the work is still going on and has continued further with active digs in Arkholme, Quernmore, Roeburndale and Littledale. Some properties in Arkholme have received the B4RN customer property equipment which has been connected up ready for “go live” as can be seen in this set of photographs. Update, Monday 1st October, 7 hours late… But the dig is done. The core duct to Arkholme digital parish hub is now finished, and fibre will be blown shortly. All the photos on flickr and our facebook page. There is a lot of activity from the various community teams around the B4RN area. The latest has been this weekend in the picturesque hamlet of Abbeystead. Some may recall that this was the village that suffered the tragedy where 16 people lost their lives and 28 were injured in the pumping station explosion on the evening of 23 May 1984. More than 100 North Lancashire residents gathered in a field near Jubilee Tower at Quernmore on Saturday to make internet history. They were all members of the B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) project, a community-led company which is about to install some of the fastest internet connections in the world into homes and businesses in the area. This is being made possible by the residents themselves who are not only investing in the company and paying for fibre cables to be connected to their premises, but are getting out their shovels and digging the trenches the cables will be laid in....

End of February Newsletter: At last night’s B4RN management meeting it was confirmed that the first target we set for funding had been well and truly surpassed, many thanks to all who have bought shares. We also have offers from farmers to dig their own, which amounts to a huge amount of class ‘B’ shares as well. CONGRATULATIONS to everyone. This possibly brings the date of the first dig into March (depending as usual on the weather). Well done everybody and keep those cheques coming in as the fundraising needs to continue!
